As part of the Environment Agency’s national campaign to increase public awareness on flooding and the actions that can be taken, they have created this interesting infographic. Released this week, it features the ‘Top 5 Quirky Flood Defences’ that are in use in the UK, with one of these systems being our very own passive flood defence system.
The passive flood defence system is a passive flood defence barrier, permanently and invisibly installed in the ground. The system will automatically rise using the lifting power of the approaching floodwater and is always on site, ready to deploy 24/7, 365 days a year.
Although some may view this flood defence measure an unusual, it has now been in operation globally since 1999. Let’s take a look at 5 interesting facts about the passive flood defence system:
1. Installed in over 25 locations throughout the world, the longest of which is 115m in Cockermouth, Cumbria, UK
2. The passive flood defence system prevented the National Archives, Washington from flooding during Hurricane Sandy, 2012
3. Applications include:
- Sea wall
- River wall
- River Ford
4. Designed for a maximum side-ways pressure of 10 x the maximum water pressure
5. Seismic tested - passive flood defence system has now undergone and passed extensive seismic testingproving that it will do the job it is designed for even after an earthquake.
