Flood Protection - Llanddowror, Wales

A wall mounted Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barrier fitted to the rear of a property

CLIENT

Natural Resources Wales

THE PROBLEM

Llanddowror is a small, historic village in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. As a county hit badly by recent flooding events, the villages in Carmarthenshire are often on ‘red alert’ whenever heavy rainfall occurs.

The River Hydfron in Llanddowror has overflowed on many occasions over the past few years, resulting in flood waters collecting at a particular catchment area of the small village, flooding homes and businesses.

Since 2011, the residents of Llanddowror and the local council have been working on flood plans to help alleviate flooding in the village, some of these measures include raising the pedestrian footbridge over the river and keeping trees along the river bed pruned.  However, due to increased flooding events over 2012 and 2013, 10 additional properties were provided with flood mitigation solutions.

I was very happy with how the project went, particularly regarding the speed with which the works were carried out as many residents are understandably concerned about further flooding as the winter weather approaches.

THE SOLUTION

As UK Flood Barriers appear on the preferred supplier list, Natural Resources Wales, contacted UKFB and asked us to tender for a scheme involving 10 properties. Soon after submitting the tender, UKFB were awarded the project.

UKFB attended each property involved in the scheme to survey and identify all points of water ingress and determine the best solutions to install. All properties were specified products from the Flood Angel® range, including Flood Defender™ Barriers, Anti-Flood Airbricks and a Flood Defender™ Wall.

The Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Wall measured at 2.8m wide by 600mm high, and was installed to the rear of a property, covering the entrance to a conservatory. It was due to the width of the entrance that this product was specified rather than a Flood Defender™ Barrier.

UKFB used the skills of a BPEC certified installer to help the team on site and the scheme was completed in one week.
