THE PROBLEM

UK Flood Barriers offered support to a family who were victim to catastrophic flooding in Hereford last August by donating and installing innovative Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barriers.

The Roberts family lost almost everything they owned when the torrential rain conditions led to a combination of water, mud and a deluge of debris entering their hill-side home on the second floor, resulting in the ceiling crashing down and flooding the ground floor. Only days later, they were again hit by another flood of severe intensity, with equally devastating results.

As the family did not have adequate home insurance to cover the damage, local councillor Russell B. Hamilton sourced donations from national and regional companies and also approached UKFB as a local flood defence company. This event was just one of hundreds to occur across the UK, as the country endured the wettest three months on record from April to July 2012.

The Roberts family have been victim to the unpredictable and devastating nature of the weather and it has turned their world upside down. I felt it was important for the community to assist in any way possible, and this generous donation from UK Flood Barriers will be of huge help to the family, ensuring they are protected from any flooding events in the future.

Russell B. Hamiliton
Councillor at Herefordshire Council

THE SOLUTION

UK Flood Barriers visited the Roberts’ home to meet with the family and to see at first hand the extent of damage caused by previous flooding. Our team discussed the best measures to install and conducted a survey to determine sizes for bespoke Flood Angel® Flood Defender™ Barriers. These were then manufactured and donated to the family in order to protect against any future flooding events.

UKFB attended to install the products and immediately following installation of the second barrier heavy rainfall began to occur. Assuming the rain would pass, the team decided to take a break and continue when it had stopped. The intense rainfall continued for 20 minutes causing flash flooding once again to the home.

Fortunately, the barrier to the rear of the property which had been installed just in time prevented any further flood water entering the home. The degree of flooding in a short amount of time was astonishing for the team to see and the reality hit home of the trauma and devastation the family had experienced.
