SMARTeST

Technologies for improved safety of the built environment in flood events.

Supporting innovation and helping young fledgling companies to test their products and get to market is one of our key objectives and so our involvement with the SMARTeST European Research project is a natural extension of this remit.

SMARTeST (Smart Resilience Technology Systems and Tools) is a research project that seeks to apply sustainable technical solutions to flood risk management problems. By creating an environment for innovation and by working with some of the most innovative companies in the flood defence sector it aims to:

  • better understand the urban systems into which innovative flood resilience (FRe) technology is placed
  • to create models in which the understanding of the benefits and impacts of these new technologies can be made
  • improve routes to market of innovative Flood Resilient (FRe) technology
  • to act as a springboard to the use of the next generation of FRe-technology

Coordinated by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) it involves nine European research institutes from seven countries, including the University of Manchester in the UK.

UK Flood Barriers is represented on the SMARTeST project with its pioneering Flood Angel® Non-return Road Gully. This passive flood defence innovation addresses one of the most common forms of flash flooding that occurs in the urban environment and once fully developed, will have the potential to offer flood protection in residential and commercial areas.

Environmental Enterprises has opened its BSI approved testing facility to SMARTeST to help support this project.
